PASSPORT & VISA
Most visitors require visa with the exceptional of citizen of certain countries of the commonwealth. It is advisable to obtain them in advance from embassies and high commissions as several airlines insist on them prior to departure. Visas can however also be obtained on arrival, at all points of entry including international airports, sea ports and border posts. Requirements may change so you are advised to contact the appropriate diplomatic or consult authority before finalizing your travel arrangements.
AIR TRAVEL
Several international airlines operate flights into Tanzania through Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, songwe international airport and Zanzibar International Airports. HEALTH
It is essential that all visitors take a course of anti malaria tablets commencing two weeks before departure. The UK department of health also recommends vaccinations against hepatitis A, polio and typhoid. Personal insurance is advised. Travelers arriving from, or via countries where yellow fever is endemic will need a certificate of vaccination. Hospitals provide good medical care in cities and towns. Flying doctors are also available.
WHAT TO TAKE
Don’t forget the camera, camcorder and binoculars, and take a torch for finding your way around your camp at night. Stock up with replacement batteries for all these goods. Take sun- glasses, hat, sun lotion, lip palm, and some insect repellent, it is better not get stung even if you are getting ant- malaria tablets. Its best to take any medicines required for the duration of the visit. A spare pair of glasses or contact lenses is also a good idea. Take plenty of film, it is difficult to obtain outside the main centres. Firearms require a special permit that should be obtained in advance. Visitors buying local handicrafts must keep cash sales receipts and ownership certificates for wildlife trophies for presentation to Customs officials on departure.
TRAVEL LIGHT
Some safaris vehicles / air charters provide limited space for luggage up to 10-15 kgs maximum . It is therefore recommended to travel with light bags since bulky suitcases will overload and might not be taken on board.
LANGUAGE
The national language in Tanzania is Kiswahili but English is widely spoken and is the language of the tourist trade and other international businesse, Chichewa is the common language of Malawi and English being an official language, Portuguese is the national language of Mozambique and English is the first national language of Kenya, Uganda and Zambia. CURRENCY
The unit of currency is the Tanzania Shilling (TShs) which is divided into 100 cents. Kenya unit of currency is Kenya shilling (Kshs), Uganda being Uganda shillings (Ushs), Zambia and Malawi currencies are kwacha; ZK and MK respectively, Rwanda uses franca as its national currency. Foreign currency in cash or in travelers cheques may be exchanged at the commercial banks, authorised dealers, or at the bureau de changes operating at the international airports, major towns and border posts.
ON SAFARI
Distances are vast and travel by road can be tiring but gives you a lot of adventures on the way, you will see more and won’t return home exhausted, always follow the instructions of your ranger or guide. Do not leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognized tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.
WHAT TO WEAR
It never gets really cold in tropical and sub sahara countries, so lightweight clothing is the norm. On safari, avoid brightly coloured clothes, they may alarm the animals. Browns, beiges and khaki are preferred. Short- sleeve – shorts/blouses and shorts are ideal depending on the tsetse flies in the park but pack a sweater, it can be chilly in the early morning and in the evening. Wear a hat to avoid sun stroke and don’t forget a swimsuit. Shoes should be sensible – walking through the bush is not like strolling through Hyde Park – and for climbing mountains, takes thermal underwear, a rain jacket, good socks and sturdy boots.
SECURITY
